Next Class: Ignite the Power Behind Your Goals

Do you have a goal you want to accomplish?

Our class on October 25 will be the night before the New Moon,
and is designed to do just that.

Join a community and sacred space for people in advertising as we set our intentions for the next month.

A New Moon happens when it reaches its minimum brightness.

At this time the dark (un-illuminated) portion of the Moon
faces almost directly toward Earth, and it's not visible to the naked eye.

In fact, on October 26 it will be the closest new moon of 2011, so you may see higher-than-usual tides along coastlines throughout the world.

This new moon can help us reflect and get to know our own needs and wants.

Check out this link with predictions on how this New Moon will affect you according to your horoscope.

We hope you'll join us on Tuesday October 25 at 7:30pm for this special class at the Bhakti Center, 25 1st Ave @ 1st Street in New York.

As always, conversation and homemade cookies after class :)

Back from Cannes, summer hiatus, Lunar Eclipse...

Hello all you wonderful people.
Yes, Cannes was wonderful :)

Save the date for July 14th -
we'll be having a little celebration
at the Pulse Music studios in Union Square
to re-live the dreams on the French Riviera.

For now,
looks like YIA is going to be on a little hiatus
as the summer is upon us
and we're getting things in order for
super-yogified
August/September.

For now, don't forget to breathe - just 3 breaths every hour
(in thru the nose, out thru the nose)
can even out your brain chemistry
and get your endocrine system back into proper secretion
(those adrenal glands are the ones that produce stress hormones that trigger fight or flight!).

So take some time this summer to be good to yourself,
relax
and keep balance in mind
as you maintain momentum towards your goals.

And by the way, we have one more solar eclipse tomorrow.

It's taking place this time in sensitive Cancer, which brings with it two polarizing forces:
the need to break destructive patterns from your past,
and the fear of change.
By confronting your anxieties,
you'll create new patterns,
opening yourself up to interesting experiences,
good habits and better relationships.
So, rock on everybody!

With love and respect for all,
x

This Lunar Eclipse: a time to release any negative energy

How's everyone been doing with the lunar eclipse we just had?

This is a time to release negative energy, to release it in the light of the full moon which is still with us tonight.
Say "be gone" just a few times as you think of what you want to release, and see it going from your life.

Full moons and especially lunar eclipses are amazingly transformative times to become really clear in your vision, a vision that is unfettered by the chains of any lack or limitation (ie., negative energy).

This is a time when the Earth's shadow completely blocks the moon – known as totality – that lasted a whopping 1 hour and 40 minutes. The last time the moon was covered for this long was in July 2000, when it lasted 7 minutes longer than that.

The entire eclipse was a little over 5 1/2 hours and the effects of it's energy were mainly felt by those who could see it. North America didn't, and observers in Europe missed the first part of the show because it occurred before the moon rose. Eastern Asia and eastern Australia didn't catch the final stages, which happened after the moon set.

Wild... check out the spiritual and global ramifications of this eclipse here: http://afsanaydely.wordpress.com/2011/05/03/total-lunar-eclipse-of-the-2011-june-15/

Up in flames: That thing that was holding you back

During class on the 19th, we began with a meditation where we called into our mind one thing that we'd like to release that was holding us back from our greatest life. After a few moments of guided meditation and deep, centered breathing, we all wrote down on a piece of paper this one thing (of course their might be more than one, but we have to start somewhere!).

The notes were then folded and collected in a porcelain bowl and brought to the front of class.

Throughout the yoga and meditation class that followed, reminders were giving of how the work they were doing right here and now was helping to release that which was written down. One of the beautiful things with yoga that makes it so transformative, is that what you experience on the mat and what you work through in practice contributes directly to changes you can see in your life off the mat.

At the close of the session, the pieces of paper were shredded, and the class learned that they would be burned that night under the rays of the full moon. We closed class with wonderful conversation and cookies, and many reported already feeling lighter having gone through the ceremony simply til that point.

So yes... later that evening, prayers of deep intention for release were given to the universe before the papers were lit on fire and the ashes cast to the wind. It was a very powerful feeling as they became engulfed in flames, sensing our attachment to them being burned away as well.

For the 28 days until the next full moon on Tuesday the 17th, the class is being reminded to keep vigil of how what was written has been released.

At any time, if a nagging remembrance of that thing released comes up - especially if the impression is deep - the process of victory is to acknowledge its lack of power because it's not real... anything with traces of fear, limitation, lack, worry, negativity... none of them are part of our real nature.

So come join us until the next full moon... we'll be having a special new moon class on May 2nd which is another energetically powerful day, as well as another cleansing on the next full moon to help this newly birthed reality to flourish in one's life and to help others new on this journey release any limitations as well.

Til soon,
Love and respect for all,
x

Special Full Moon Class - 28 Day pledge for transformation!!

The night of full moon is a time of beauty and magic.
As are the nights before and afterwards, which this one will be.

Full moon evenings are called moments of opportunity, and this opportunity gives us many things...

It is not only a moment of regeneration in which you can again contact your lost vision, or contact a new and greater vision, but also a moment to charge all your being and set your steps right on the path of evolution and service while releasing many obstacles and hindrances in one's nature.

So come release anything that might be holding you back, and set a bolder vision of your greatest reality with us in this special class!

A 28 day pledge ceremony will be offered for all those inspired to change!

"TGIF? No! It's TGIT! Thank God It's Tuesday cause that's when class is!!"

After this was exclaimed by one student to the rest of the class, we all had a good laugh...

Yet it was also a heartfelt expression that the benefits of YIA class were being felt by others... this same student even declared that:

"My entire week is better when I take this class - it just is.
I'm more creative, I'm happier, less stressed...
This is exactly what I was looking for... But I didn't know it...
And it's exactly what I needed.
Thank you so much, seriously... thank you for having these classes."

What a gift for us YIA teachers to see this yoga at work in peoples lives - we are simply transmitters of this wisdom who have also felt its benefits - and what a blessing for those who are coming to class that they are experiencing firsthand how this ancient, transformative practice has the ability to change their lives for the better.

As Springtime is upon us and all things begin to grow towards the sun, we can also flourish in the direction of the goodness that helps us to blossom in all aspects of life...

The opportunity is here to naturally make a commitment to grow and thus reveal the beautiful, natural expression that is always within us and only waiting to come forth unobstructed into reality...

Whatever negative habits or old patterns no longer serve us - and no matter how long they may have been there - this is a powerful time to let them go... and a powerful time to plant new seeds of intention for life to be guided by the wisdom within that says this is the path of least resistance... the path sweetly decorated by irreplaceable moments of deep satisfaction, happiness and peace.

This month we'll build momentum for walking this path by having class EVERY TUESDAY... so mark your calendars for April 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th... YIA will be here... same time, same place...

May we be strong and peaceful as we make this journey towards of our greatest clarified vision. The time is now. Let's begin.

Class March 15th & 29th: Dedicated to Getting Through Difficult Times

More than ever, we need to be strong and steady.

As the daily demands of life
and those occasions that we don't expect
arise to challenge us
- Japan's recent earthquake and tsunami being an arresting example -
we must cultivate a strength within that will carry us through.

During these two classes,
we'll share
some Kundalini yoga practices and meditations
as taught by Yogi Bhajan
that are designed to help one get through challenging times.

These practices
can help keep ourselves aligned
in the powerful projection of positive thought and healing
as we naturally manifest greater good in our lives
and in the lives around us.

We'll work to
strengthen our nervous system,
focus our minds,
and connect with our breath
so that we can meet the demands of this time
filled with accelerated personal and global change.

In doing so,
we will also get closer
 to living the life
we are truly meant for.

With love and respect for all,

Next class March 15th! And a bit of inspiration...

Our next class will be just a few days before Spring,
and the days will continue to get longer and longer...

We can also extend our days
by gradually arising a few minutes earlier each morning...
In those extra moments every week,
we can help a dream that lies within us to grow...

Is there a dream project that you've not yet started
but have always wanted to begin?

Maybe just one hour every morning
can help get you closer to the realization of that dream...

As we approach our next class,
here's a little bit of wisdom to carry us through...

Maybe it will inspire a few mornings of sitting quietly with ourselves
to gain clarity for all steps ahead,
and to walk confidently in the direction of our dreams...
dreams that can be expressed beautifully in reality.

This is from The Bhagavad Gita, 5.24...

"One whose happiness
is within,
who is active
and rejoices
within,
and whose aim
is inward
is actually the perfect mystic.

He is liberated in the Supreme,
and ultimately
he attains the Supreme."

See you soon :)

Why the heck should you meditate? Here's some scientific proof...

Hi everyone!

This past Tuesday in yoga class, one of our students had never meditated before. Big surprise? Probably not. I mean, how many people have actually tried it, or if they did, gave up because it was too hard, didn't seem to work, or just wasn't for them? Sound familiar? Well... I have to admit - I was one of those people.

Antonia is much calmer than me as I'm a type-A, relatively hyper person, so meditation is super difficult since I find it hard to stay still most of the time. When I first got into yoga, I mainly did the asanas (Sanskrit for "seat" which are the poses/movements), and I always traded meditation for headstands and faster sequences.

Then I started researching (mainly because I love finding scientific proof for stuff) and what I discovered forced me to get with the "Sit Still, and Give Your Mind a Break!" program. Truly, who really wants to always be thinking about 10 million things simultaneously in their head anyway?  Meditation gives you the space and openness to get out of the monkey mind that rules you, and actually find some, ah ha! Peace.

So what's up with meditation? Over the past 40 years, dozens of universities across the world have studied it, specifically looking at the effects of meditation on human physiology and behavior. The research essentially says that meditation produces benefits for your mind, body, emotions, mental functioning and relationships.

  • Greater Orderliness of Brain Functioning
  • Improved Ability to Focus
  • Increased Creativity
  • Deeper Level of Relaxation
  • Improved Perception and Memory
  • Development of Intelligence
  • Natural Change in Breathing
  • Decrease in Stress Hormone
  • Lower Blood Pressure
  • Reversal of Aging Process
  • Reduced Need for Medical Care
  • Reduction in Cholesterol
  • Increased Self-Actualization
  • Increased Strength of Self-Concept
  • Decreased Cigarette, Alcohol, and Drug Abuse
  • Increased Productivity
  • Improved Relations at Work
  • Increased Relaxation and Decreased Stress
  • Improved Health and More Positive Health Habits

And if that doesn't give you reason to try it, check out the video below of a newbie meditator :)

Hi everyone - We were mentioned in the latest  SheSays newsletter!

If you're in the advertising industry, you definitely need to know about this amazing group.

Happy Valentine's Day!

We hope everyone had a fun weekend :)

We've got some good news!
Our friend Erika Levy is in charge of marketing a new yoga book called
Lovers' Yoga by Darrin Zeer.

She lives in Denver and sent us a package about 2 weeks ago. The other day I called her up and said that we never received the box of books. She was disappointed because she didn't put tracking on it, so we figured they got lost in the mail from Denver - New York.

Then, just in time for Valentine's Day, the 10 autographed books arrived!
Whoever shows up to our next class on Tuesday February 22, will get an extra special gift.

Better late, than never :)

Love and respect for all,

How yoga helped me face my fears

In September 2008 I left a fulfilling job in Toronto to embark on my yoga journey.

Now you might be wondering, why would I give up my job for a yoga teacher training course? The reason was simple - a lifetime opportunity to study with a special teacher.

After reading the book “Yoga Beneath the Surface” by Srivatsa Ramaswami & David Hurwitz, I knew I had to find out more about Ramaswami because I was so inspired. Through my research, I discovered that his teacher had been the legendary Sri Tirumalai Krishnamacharya and that he had studied with him for 33 years as the longest standing student outside of his own family.

For those not familiar with Krishnamacharya, he is known as “the father of modern yoga” and taught many of today’s most influential yoga teachers that came to the west including B.K.S. Iyengar (founder of Iyengar yoga), Pattabhi Jois (founder of Ashtanga yoga), and T.K.V. Desikachar (Krishnamacharya's own son).

A young Ramaswami chanting with his guru Krishnamacharya.

What was strange is that hardly anyone in the west had ever heard of Ramaswami before and yet Krishnamacharya had taught two very famous teachers that essentially helped popularize yoga. The book said that Ramaswami came from Chennai (India), so when I discovered that he had been living in New Jersey and was going to be teaching in LA I knew I had to sign up no matter what. It was also the first time he was offering a full 200-hour teacher training course, as previously he had only done short workshops, and I felt it was meant to be.

The course changed my life, and Ramaswami turned out to be a humble, funny and knowledgeable man who knew the yoga sutras by heart and possessed one of the most beautiful chanting voices I'd ever heard. In fact, on the first day of the course, he sat at the front of class in his gray slacks, button down dress shirt and bare feet and chanted for the first five minutes without saying a word, his presence was simply transcendent and brought tears to my eyes.

Meghan and Srivatsa Ramaswami
Ramaswami made me realize that sometimes fear was holding me back from fulfilling my true potential. I danced growing up, but I was never the most flexible in class - my strengths were my jumps and my personality on stage. Later as I got into yoga, I always told myself that if I couldn’t do certain yoga poses it was because my body was not flexible enough. Doing his classes daily made me realize that I could go further than I thought possible. The discipline of waking up early and riding my bike for 20 minutes to the yoga practice wasn't always easy. Some days I felt like sleeping in, but I never skipped a class. Slowly, I started to see small changes occur not only in my physical body, but also in my mind and breathing patterns. I noticed that I was less stressed, I slept better, and I felt more fit and strong.

Now that I'm back to working, it's been more difficult to have a structured practice, but I've found that the same rules that apply to yoga apply to life. Whenever I face my fears and commit to something, I see results. Discipline is not always easy and I think that we can be least accountable to ourselves and more with others as we want to live up to their expectations. Learning with a teacher like Ramaswami helped me get in tune with my body and mind, more than I had ever been before, and I realized that being accountable and committed led to breaking through my fears, which was one of the most enriching experiences of my life.

Each month Ramaswami puts out a newsletter that I strongly encourage you to read.  Not only does he pass down his yogic wisdom, but he has even gone as far as digging through his old notes from the 1960s-80s from his studies with Krishnamacharya. Take a peek at his February 2011 newsletter, by clicking here. Enjoy!
